The professional competence to practice the profession of speech therapist in health care is obtained by completing an accredited master’s program in the field of special pedagogy with a state final examination of speech therapy and surdopedy following graduation from an accredited bachelor’s program of special pedagogy with a state exam in speech therapy and surdopedy and passing an accredited qualification course of Speech Therapist in Health Care, which is organized by universities according to a special legal regulation. The specialized competence of speech therapist in health care is obtained by completing a specialized education lasting 3 years completed with an attestation examination. The designation of a specialization speech therapist in health care with specialized competence is clinical speech therapist. The professional and specialized competence to practice clinical speech therapy is obtained by completing at least five years of an accredited master’s program in the field of special pedagogy with a state final examination of speech therapy and surdopedy if study in an accredited master's degree program was commenced at the latest in the academic year 2018/2019; and by completing specialized training in the field of clinical speech therapy.

Until the acquisition of specialist competence, the speech therapist in health care works at a provider of health services under the supervision of a clinical speech therapist who is competent to perform a medical profession without professional supervision.
