The activity of a medical rescuer is considered to be activity in the framework of specific nursing care in the provision of pre-hospital emergency care and in the provision of acute intensive care, including emergency care. In addition, the medical rescuer is involved in urgent, medical and diagnostic care.

Professional qualifications for pursuing the profession of paramedic is acquired through the completion of a) an accredited medical Bachelor’s study programme for the preparation of paramedics, b) at least three years of study in the field of certified paramedic at post-secondary medical schools in the first year was started at the latest in the school year 2018/2019, or c) a secondary medical school in the field paramedic, if the first year of study was commenced at the latest in the 1998/1999 school year. A healthcare worker who gained professional competence to perform the profession of general nurse pursuant to Section 5 and specialised competence in the field of critical care nurse and who has been a member of a mobile medical rescue service within the scope of at least half the weekly hours of work for a period of 5 years in the past 6 years, also has professional competence to perform the profession of paramedic.

The medical rescuer may carry out specific nursing care in the provision of pre-hospital emergency intensive care without professional supervision only after one year of practice in the provision of acute inpatient care, including emergency care
