Laboratory activity in the framework of diagnostic care and investigation and measurement of the components of living and working conditions in the framework of the protection and promotion of public health in cooperation with a physician and a specialist in laboratory methods is considered to be the work of the lab technician.

Professional qualifications for pursuing the profession of medical laboratory technician is acquired through the completion of a) an accredited medical Bachelor’s study programme for the preparation of medical laboratory technicians, b) at least three years of study in the field certified medical laboratory technician at post-secondary medical schools, c) an accredited Bachelor’s study programme with a natural sciences focus, or at least three years of study in fields with a natural science focus at post-secondary technical schools, and an accredited qualification course in laboratory methods, d) an accredited Bachelor’s study programme with a natural sciences, electrical engineering or mathematics/physics focus, and an accredited qualification course in laboratory methods in the protection and support of public health, or at least three years of study in fields with a natural science or electrical engineering focus at post-secondary technical schools, and an accredited qualification course in laboratory methods in the protection and support of public health, or e) a secondary medical school in the field medical laboratory technician, if the first year of study was commenced at the latest in the 2004/2005 school year. Professional competence to practice the occupation of medical laboratory technician is also obtained by a medical worker who has acquired professional competence to practice as a professional worker in laboratory methods and in the preparation of medicinal products according to Section 26.
